The Military Diet: Does it really work?

by Sean Dryson

So, you're as fat as garbage, and was looking for yet another diet you could try.

Well, here's one: The Military Diet. From their advertising page:

"You can lose up to 10 pounds in one week on the Military Diet, without strenuous exercise or prescriptions. And best of all, the Military Diet is free!

The food combinations in the Military Diet are designed to burn fat, kick start your metabolism and lose weight fast. In fact, the Military Diet is one of the best natural diets for rapid weight loss without a prescription." And so forth.

"10 pounds in one week??" you ask?

Yep, so they claim. I'll tell you about my experience trying out the diet in just a bit. First, the diet itself:

For three days, you eat as you're instructed, three small meals as described, and then for four days you eat the way you always eat.

(See more details here.)

Now, does this diet really work and how does it feel to be on it?

Well, obviously results may differ for everyone, but personally I did try out this diet and can now tell you what the experience was like for me anyway. Your own personal results will be your own, obviously, but here's mine. I'm a 37 year old white male:

The first day, everything went splendid. After the peanut buttered toast for breakfast, I felt satisfied.

And the ice cream for dinner was a treat!

I kept up the diet for the entire day quite easily.

Then came day two. It went quite allright until about late afternoon.

I must say I was quite glad when it was time to eat dinner again.

However, about two hours after dinner, I was feeling quite hungry and weak.

I tried to go to bed, not wanting to give up on the diet now, being only one day away from having stuck to it to the letter.

But by 10pm, I had to eat just a little snack, because by now I had a headache that was not going to let me sleep, and a horrible weakness that screamed to me "EAT!!!! EAT DAMN YOU!!!". I got up and ate one egg and about three crackers.

Wasn't enough I'm afraid. Around 12:30 am, I could not go on living anymore. My head was really, really, really aching so bad I could no longer sleep. A feeling of weakness kept me awake.

Seeing as that I really needed my beauty sleep to get through work the next day, I finally just went to the kitchen and ate a decent meal.

After that I could sleep, even though the headache stayed with me. Only in the morning when I woke up, it was gone.

Well, by now the diet was pretty much screwed up, but I thought I'll just continue it for day 3.

I had the breakfast as prescribed, and thought I was on my way again.

But no such luck. I needed my strength and my strength was gone by around 10 or 11am. I finally just needed to go eat a proper meal or I couldn't go on living.

In conclusion: Although the first day it went well, I'm afraid the second and third day's food simply wasn't nearly enough to sustain me. I needed more. Granted, the website does say men will need some calories more than women.

For the two days I was on it, I did lose roughly 2 kilograms (4lb 7oz) though.

So, the diet can work I'm sure, if you're able to get by on such little bits of food for three days straight. I unfortunately couldn't.

But you're welcome to try.
